The Week's Favorite Videos: Dissing Thompson, Dancing Obama, and Dodging Clinton
By Joshua Levy, 11/02/2007 - 10:10am

It’s our favorite political videos of the week! Watch as Fred Thompson dismisses a simple question from a simple citizen, complicated cookies are explained nice and easy, Barack Obama struts his stuff on Ellen, Hillary Clinton stumbles on the driver’s license issue, and the Daily Show asks the most important question facing America today.

6. Candidate Challenge: Fred Thompson

Why Tuesday wrapped up their Candidate Challenge this week, securing responses about election reform from 11 of the 16 candidates. Only one candidate explicitly turned down the request: Fred Thompson. In fact, the Thompson team wouldn’t even let Executive Director Jacob Soboroff explain what his question was; they just walked away from him every time he approached. Why so dismissive, Fred? A bit more than 200 views on YouTube.

5. Cookies 101

Harvard’s Berkman Center is looking for web- and video-savvy folks to produce online videos explaining what cookies are (the things on your computer, not that you eat), so they launched the Cookie Crumbles Contest. Tim Welch, otherwise known as Funkee Munkee, submitted this great explanation. With the aid of post-it notes and and engaging way of comparing a house to the Internet, Welch makes it so clear your grandma will clearing her cookies in no time. About 500 views on YouTube.

4. Barack Obama on Ellen

Ellen Degeneres has her guests dance with her as they come out onstage, presidential candidate or note. So Barack Obama emerges from the dressing room confidently strutting his stuff to the strands of Beyoncé, even taking a jab at a punching bag and throwing off his watch in the process. More than 15,000 views on YouTube.

3. John Edwards - Look your children in the eye tonight

John Edwards, who continues to lag behind Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in the polls, caught fire a bit at this week’s Democratic debate. Saying that the election is about whether or not the American system works, the increasingly populist Edwards asked “Are you willing to look your children in the eye tonight and say, I’m going to turn this mess over to you?” A respectable 63,000 views on YouTube.

2. Hillary Clinton flipflops around on licenses for illegals

In debates, Hillary Clinton is usually solid and on-message, rarely showing signs of weakness. But at the Democratic debate earlier this week, she went back and forth about driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants, giving an opening to the moderators as well as the other candidates, including a sharp Chris Dodd. More than 42,000 views on YouTube.
